How Can I Work With Music Agencies? Many artists want to know if they will be able to connect with music agencies if they don’t live in a traditional music town.
At first, there were the major music cities and if you wanted to meet people, you’d have to be from New York, Nashville, Los Angeles, Memphis, Miami, Nashville, London etc..
Then, cities evolved that began to produce incredible music and were subsequently lauded much importance:
Glasgow, Austin, Iceland, Nebraska, Paris, Seattle, Toronto, Berlin, Cologne etc….
Living far away from any of the cities above, it’s definitely harder to reach out to music agencies, and it makes the network much harder to tap into in general.
An incredible advantage that we now have is that the internet is so available to us all. Even without the internet, the good news is that it’s not as bad as it used to be.
Imagine being in a tiny town, far from anywhere.
If traveling far to play is not suitable for you and you can setup profiles on the most popular sites to have an online presence. People will talk about you if you are playing amazing shows no matter how small.
The internet offers you an unprecedented opportunity never before seen in human history where you can great profiles online and then use them to interact with the world.
If there’s a local fan base for you to tap into – go for it.
The more people you can promote your music to the better.
Once you have this local scene locked down, you are then in a position to reach out to your nearest larger town – this doesn’t guarantee you will get on the radar of a music agency, but may help to get you closer because if you build a fan-base, they will eventually hear about you.
But wait! A fanbase is not necessary.once a band that i was working with had developed interest and a following music agents were trying to get to work with them.
They were making songs at home in their bedroom and sent one to their favorite blog. The blog was also read by a record label who offered to release the track.many agents and record company people began to chase them and they ended up working with some of the best in their niche.
There are so many examples where bands that were far from the music epicenters were able to do really well.
As far as I can tell, Las Vegas is not a music town , and Brandon Flowers from The Killers even left his original band because they wanted to move to Los Angeles (a music town ).
Leaving his former band, Flowers was then able to focus on a new act with Dave Keuning resulting in The Killers – all while based in Las Vegas. Some people assume that music agencies will only work with larger established acts, and thats simply not true.
Starting off, many agents work very closely with the band.
You have a strategy to get to where you want to go.
When they believe in what you are doing, they will stick their neck out for you and pull favors etc in the hope for your loyalty when you blow up.
Giving upcoming bands the platform to start from, and putting on the initial smaller shows, the music agencies dont make any money, but they get the profile and satisfaction of having found an artist and nurtured it.
Dont be afraid to begin dialogue with music agencies, they want you to be just as successful as you want to be.
They want to feel like they found or discovered you so focus on generating heat that will attract them.
