Graffiti is a form of art that is used to express the artist’s feeling and emotions, whether that be of some kind of social discontent or otherwise, serious or wrapped in a sense of humor or creative design.

Just like pouring out your feelings in a diary.

Although many people see this form of expression as a nuisance and also see it as vandalism, it is hard to not be interested in it’s unique style and free expression.

Graffiti is a social expression, a voice of the community, of our youth and is part of the urban world around us.

It is generally harmless, vibrant and creative and brightens up walls and buildings.

There are many different styles but the two most common types are tagging and hip hop graffiti.

Different styles of work fall into different categories.

Hip hop graffiti pieces are usually very large and are created using aerosol spray paints. They usually are a complex mix of letters or a cartoon. Hip hop graffiti usually takes longer to achieve than simple graffiti characters as it takes a lot of planning and designing.

Tagging graffiti using graffiti letters is used as a means to ‘mark territory’. This type of  is used as a way to mark their presence ’so and so was here’. Some of it is racially motivated or sometimes even politically motivated.

Commercial Graffiti is seen as a big problem. This involves private organisations paying graff artists to spray paint advertising logos on walkways and buildings so that they can promote their product. This is a very illegal form of advertising.

Graffiti is amazing and its a great way to expression yourself through colours and pictures. It can mean everything to an artist so they use it as means of expressing their feelings if they have a lot kept in. It is a stress relief and it is fun painting a wall. People express their feelings by writing them down, speaking to someone but others choose words in fierce, vibrant colours, that come across as a message in a piece of art.

Afterwards graffiti writing took a bad shape as it was seen to be used by gangs and other local groups as a means to scuffle and wage street war.

After the change of shift of graffiti writing from the marking of kingdoms to a perceived evil symbol, it has now taken the form of accepted art. It forms a way of expression with art content in it. It also symbolizes the state of the mind of the creator. The graffiti on the walls can make you smile and at the same time make you annoyed. All this depends upon the state of the mind of the creator and of the onlooker too.

Another graffiti tip is the order in which the graffiti making should go. First make a background for your graffiti to stand out. Make the background such that it gives a smooth finish to the graffiti. Make use of light colors such as white or Grey to make the background. Once the background is ready make use of a small cap spray can to make the outline of the graffiti. The outline should be of light color and should merge well with the background. The outline is just for your convenience and not to stand out. Once the outline is over, go ahead with real painting and make the graffiti as per your thoughts.

Next is to make use of 3D effects; with the use of thin stroke of dull color you can make a three dimensional effect. To make the thin line, hold the can near the wall and make a fast stroke. This will limit the spreading of the paint and give you a sharp thin line. The colors of the graffiti are also very important and hence basic color wheel should be kept in mind while deciding the color combination.

To make your graffiti look tidy and neat, fill in all the space that is available. Do not leave gaps within your graffiti. Fill all the gaps with proper strokes of the color can. Also make sure that light shade does not overlap dark shade, it should always be the other way round.

Graffiti art has, over time, become a form of artistic drawing.

In another article, I’ve captured the main characteristics of artistic art in more detail but let’s do a quick review here.

We know that graffiti art is often loud (meaning brightly colored), has a 3D look and feel to it, and looks mostly stylish. One might even classify graffiti art as contemporary art. Everything about graffiti is an expression of the culture of some group or country.

Although graffiti art is most widely known as art drawn by vandals on public walls with spray cans, the same term can be extended to represent art with similar characteristics as mentioned above.

You may be drawn to drawing graffiti names because graffiti art looks stylish with its bright attractive colors, and that applies to graffiti texts as well.

To start drawing graffiti names, you need to prepare the following drawing tools. You need a light pencil, preferrably HB, and a set of permanent magic markers with a variety of colors.

Next, you need to decide on the style of the texts. There are literally thousands of styles to choose from. Just take a look at the thousands of font types available on the Internet for download. You may want to visit one of these websites and choose a font design that you really like. You’ll be using this as your reference. Some websites even allow you to create a preview image with the selected font type. Simply save the image to your computer for reference.

Start drawing with your pencil on the surface. Draw lightly at first so that you can erase any mistakes you make. Sometimes, your texts may be too big or small, and you can easily rectify this by using a dust free eraser.

Once you’re satisfied with how the graffiti name looks, trace the outline with a fine magic marker. The shapes will start to emerge now. Then start filling in the different letters with colors. Be bold and creative here. After all, it’s graffiti texts, so you want it to come out attractive, bold and stylish.

Use a different color to create some shades just inside the outlines. This will create the illusion that the texts are 3D. If you’re familiar to using Photoshop or any image editing software, this is similar to creating the emboss effect.

Drawing the drop shadow is optional but if you want your graffiti name to look more alive and realistic, by all means give your graffiti name a light shadow below.
