History of Graffiti
The term “graffiti” was used by archaeologists to describe the drawings and writings they found on ancient buildings and monuments in Pompeii, Egypt and in the Roman catacombs. In fact going back in time, graffiti beginnings started off as drawings, logos or figures sprayed on walls as far back as 1500BC and maybe we could take it even further back to caveman times!

Contextual Graffiti
Today the ‘words’ we use to communicate with could be aptly described as our ‘contextual graffiti’, scratched onto the hard outer surface of our lives. It is a way of expressing the inner core of feelings and moods, in a creative expression of colours, shapes and styles in an all different graffiti alphabet style. The graffiti on the wall represents a statement that is often dressed in amazingly vibrant yellows, citrus oranges, radiant greens and bright reds. If you want to express yourself creatively and legitimately in this style you can find the graffiti supplies you need here.
Often by artists unknown and often by popular known artists like Banksy , a story or message is shared with the public, expressing both themselves and the general human condition in a blatant call to attention that one can hardly fail to notice.
Graffiti Street Art
Graffiti street art is as much of a familiar social expression as a deeply personal one and is filled with weighted meaning. Many people who are against graffiti, see it as a reflection of social disruption, as in gang tagging, a rebellious attitude and a wanton and abandoned self indulgence. They argue that it represents nothing but vandalisation of private and public property no matter how artistic, funky and bright it is claimed to be.
Spray paint was invented in 1952 and modern graffiti as we now know it can be traced back to Philadelphia during the mid 60’s.
Then, it was mainly used by governmental opponents or gangs pointing out and marking their territorial boundaries.
Graffiti street art can also be viewed as a true call for artistic emancipation and a real and valued reflection of the culture that it comes from.
In this view graffiti is seen as a harmless, creative means of expression and communication and as something that serves to brighten up an otherwise dark and derelict building with a full wall mural or gives life to a sad and neglected wall.
This may apply particularly to areas of a city that are subject to deprivation and lack of care. It is argued that it is better for adolescents to involve themselves in something productive and inspiring, rather than getting involved in stealing, violence or both especially if it is taking place in a run down neighborhood.
Creative Graffiti Sketches
Some graffiti sketches, tags, characters and designs are outstanding and display an amazing amount of creativity and talent by what is almost always an unestablished or officially untrained artist. These graffiti creators have trained themselves and learn from each other. You can’t just pick up a can of spray paint and produce a showpiece . It takes constancy, dedication, practice, the right tools and self mastery just like any craft to do it well. So perhaps some recognition of the talent here and of the commitment to his art should be given to the artist.
Graffiti doesn’t have to always be on walls or on the a side of a building or train. You can also draw it on paper or put graffiti onto a canvas and in that way it is well presented and can be used for decorating the home or office, given as a gift, or even added to your own collection! You can let your imagination run wild, thinking of new designs and ideas to make a masterpiece.
If you are planning to create a few pieces either on canvas or on a wall you need to know how to get started. What materials and tools are best, what could go wrong, how to create a design without making a mistake.
As with any art there a some defining rules about graffiti layouts and lettering.
For example. You need to know that controlling the spray can be difficult especially if you want no drips! It’s tough to learn and takes practice. You may want to use special graffiti markers . Not too small and petite. You have to think big and bold with spray paint. Do it on something clear, a canvas will do the job. Use bold colours. Don’t always use “solid” colours such as black.
Look at existing graffiti pieces around to inspire you with ideas and ways to implement your design.
Use black for outlines to make your message, picture stand out or other colours like grey and brown. Surf online for ideas of different fonts and ideas for colours and patterns. Always plan what you want on a piece of paper first and keep a scrapbook for your ideas.
